An Interactive Learning Experience for Computer Games & Visual Effects Students

As part of their effort in equipping APU students into the workforce community, APIIT’s School of Media, Arts & Design (SoMAD) recently organized an industrial visit to the Streamline Studios, one of the well-established game development companies in Malaysia and worldwide for the Computer Games Development (CGD) and Visual Effects (VFX) students. This visit was coordinated and managed by our lecturers from SoMAD, with aims to introduce students to the working culture and environment in the studio.

During their visit, our students had a chance to talk to some of the masterminds behind internationally-renowned video game titles such as Street Fighter V, Final Fantasy XV and BioShock Infinite. Some of the highlights in this visit were the introduction to international game projects the studio was working on, as well as a sharing session that provided students with an insight of skills required to develop a career in the creative games and visual effects industry. Speakers at Streamline Studios also shared some tips and tricks of becoming a good games designer, alongside their valuable experience developing games for multinational companies over the years.

An extra bonus was gained as the visiting group met some of the APU alumnus, who are now working at the studio as game developers. It was a fruitful trip as it broadened the horizon of students from both CGD and VFX in this gaming industry, apart from having an enjoyable afternoon with these game experts.

Beautifying the City - APIIT SoMAD Students Paint Mural at Puchong Food Truck Area

As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, a group of students from the APIIT School of Media, Arts and Design (SoMAD) contributed in the Subang Jaya City Council (Majlis Perbandaran Subang Jaya – MPSJ) efforts to beautify the walls at the food truck area in Jalan Kenari, Puchong.

This project was assigned to us by iM4u and has received tremendous response from the SoMAD students and lecturers, in which the mural was painted over 4 days, from Thursday, 8 September to Sunday, 11 September. Apart from contributing to a good cause, the students also gained the opportunity to apply the artistic skills learnt in their classes.

The lecturers in SoMAD has coordinated and planned for this initiative to take place, good job and well done to Wong Chee Meng, Christine Lim, Debbie Liew, Fitri Anas Muhiddin and Siew Yen for making this happen! We look forward to seeing more participation in upcoming CSR projects like these.

Green & Mighty - The ALL NEW Green Screen Studio

We are excited to share that APU & APIIT now house a state-of-the-art, professional Green Screen Studio! It is located at Level 3, APU Campus @ TPM. This new addition, as part of our new facilities in the APU Campus @ TPM, is catered for the media production needs of the newly launched programmes from APIIT School of Media, Arts and Design (SoMAD), which are related to the broadcasting, advertising and post production fields. It is available to all staff and students at APU & APIIT upon booking, to also benefit other programmes and clubs and societies-related activities.

The studio comprises a range of professional equipment, such as a Canon DSLR camera, a Sony XDCAM camcorder, a Dolly track and lighting systems. The walls had been made soundproof to isolate noise and external disturbances while a video or photo shoot is ongoing. With a 10-seater roundtable, it is now a complete and conducive learning environment that encourages creativity and new ideas. In addition, a corner of the studio has been dedicated for students’ projects showcase, in which excellent projects are exhibited to inspire more students.

Media, Arts & Design Festival (MADFest) 2016

We are glad to share that our FIRST EVER Media, Arts and Design Festival (MADFest) was a great success!

The festival, organised by the APIIT School of Media, Arts & Design (SoMAD), spanned from Wednesday, 27th January to Saturday, 30th January 2016. A series of activities and events were laid out by the dedicated team of organisers, which included industrial talks, workshops, artwork displays, game competitions and more. These activities also saw participation from the public and secondary school students; 7 Secondary 4 students from the Asia Pacific Smart School (APSS) participated in the Monster Sculpting workshop as well.

The activities held were aimed to spread awareness about APIIT SoMAD programmes and to create a platform for students to express their creativity. It was also seen as the ‘report card day’ for our first batch of SoMAD students, as they exhibited their artworks they did in their classes throughout the year. A handful of impressive masterpieces were exhibited -  some even got purchase offers from visitors who were interested to bring them home!

Besides the games tournament and the cosplay competition which created a lot of buzz among the students community, the doodling and sculpting workshops also received overwhelming response from the students; all sessions were a full-house. Other than a memorable hands-on experience, participants of the workshop also brought home their artworks of the day – a clay sculpture or a button badge with their doodles on. Apart from that, industry experts from ESports Malaysia, MDEC and Tau Films also shared their working experiences in the design field, in which students were able to gain insights and learn about their future career pathway.

Looking forward to see more great events like this in the future! Thumbs up to the MADFest committee and the students who participated to make this event a wonderful one. For the complete photo gallery, visit: http://tinyurl.com/hsd29lr
