APU CLCS Chinese Orchestra’s Journey of Passion and Excellence

Chinese orchestras have long thrived in Malaysia, nurtured by a rich ecosystem of cultural groups, schools, universities, and institutions.

At Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU)—renowned for its diversity with students from over 130 countries—the Chinese Orchestra Team of the Chinese Language & Culture Society (CLCS) has flourished for ten remarkable years, fostering cultural appreciation and musical excellence.

A Legacy of Tradition and Musical Brilliance

The Chinese orchestra, with its roots dating back to the 1920s, mirrors the structure of a Western symphony orchestra but showcases the beauty of traditional Chinese instruments. Divided into four sections—wind, plucked strings, bowed strings, and percussion—each instrument plays a vital role in creating a harmonious and expressive musical experience.

With carefully crafted melodies and dynamic compositions, the Chinese orchestra transcends language barriers, evoking emotions that words alone cannot express.

Since its establishment in October 2015, the APU CLCS Chinese Orchestra Team has grown steadily, not only in numbers but also in reputation. The team has participated in numerous performances on and off campus, spreading the enchanting sound of Chinese music while creating unforgettable memories for both members and audiences alike.

A Defining Moment of Triumph at the ‘Yue Ming’ Competition

The APU CLCS Chinese Orchestra Team recently clinched the First Runner-Up Gold Award at the "Yue Ming" Chinese Music Ensemble Competition.

The team’s dedication and hard work culminated in a remarkable achievement on January 19, 2025, when they clinched the First Runner-Up Gold Award in the open category of the prestigious "Yue Ming" (which means “Joyful Resonance”) Chinese Music Ensemble Competition at Central i-City Mall, Shah Alam.

Competing against 10 formidable teams, the orchestra captivated the judges and audience with their masterful performance of “Yu Zhou Kai Ge” (“Triumphal Return of Fishing Boats”), a piece celebrated for its intricate melodies and dynamic rhythm.

Under the expert guidance of coach Ms Umi Lem, an esteemed Artistic Director, the team delivered a mesmerising performance, with each member playing a crucial role:

  • Boon Wei Kein – Cello, anchoring the harmonies;
  • Woody Lim Wei Sheng & Oscar Thiau Hong Sheng – Erhu (two-stringed bowed instrument), delivering expressive melodies;
  • Derek Lee Seng Ken, Wong Lin Yin, Fong Suo Jun & Tang Yi Ling – Dizi (Chinese flute), weave lively tunes;
  • Gan Zhi Ming & Andy Mah Jun Wei – Percussion, driving the rhythm;
  • Cheong Jun Xian & Loh Cheng Ying – Pipa (four-stringed lute), adding brilliance to the composition;
  • Kong Xin Hang – Yangqin (hammered dulcimer), enriching the arrangement with resonant tones.

This victory is a testament to the team's relentless dedication, passion, and the strong bonds they have built over the years. Apart from the instruments mentioned above, the Zhongruan (a plucked string instrument) and the Guzheng (a plucked zither) are also essential in forming a complete Chinese orchestra.
