Recently, Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) Society of Petroleum Engineers Student Chapter (APU SPE SC) organised an insightful volunteer training session in collaboration with Greenpeace, bringing together enthusiastic students for a meaningful learning experience.
Led by Ms Fatin Ayuni Mohd Suhaimi (Lecturer, School of Engineering at APU), this training provided students with an in-depth understanding of pressing environmental issues while equipping them with practical skills in advocacy and non-violent activism.
Engaging Activities and Non-Violence Advocacy
For the first half of the training, students engaged in hands-on learning experiences focused on pressing environmental issues such as global warming and non-biodegradable waste.
Through interactive discussions and group activities, they explored the principles of non-violent activism, examining its significance in social movements and its real-world applications.
Additionally, by analysing historical examples and engaging in thought-provoking exercises, students gained a deeper understanding of how peaceful advocacy can drive meaningful change and contribute to global sustainability efforts.
Fieldwork and Community Impact
For the second half of the training, students were divided into two groups and tasked with visiting local restaurants to advocate for sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic straws.
Engaging in meaningful conversations with business owners and staff, they highlighted the environmental impact of plastic waste and promoted the benefits of adopting eco-friendly practices.
Through these interactions, students gained firsthand experience in environmental advocacy, learning how to effectively communicate and inspire change at the community level.
At the end, their efforts yielded positive responses, with two restaurants expressing a strong interest in adopting eco-friendly practices, demonstrating the real-world impact that grassroots activism can have in fostering sustainable change.
Inspiring change and future Commitment
As the training came to a close, students reflected on the knowledge and experiences gained throughout the session, reinforcing their commitment to environmental advocacy and sustainability.
This eye-opening experience not only deepened their understanding of pressing environmental challenges, but also motivated them to take proactive steps in promoting sustainability within their communities.
Equipped with newfound knowledge and skills, the students left with a stronger sense of purpose, ready to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.
