The Dialogue Forum enabled students to interact with thought leaders and experts on global water issues such as water policies, innovations, and regional concerns, providing practical insights into sustainable water practices and sparking reflections on how they might contribute to global solutions.
On 24 October 2024, a group of enthusiastic International Relations (IR) students from Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) attended the Kuala Lumpur Eco Film Festival (KLEFF) 2024 held at the Semua House in Kuala Lumpur.
The KLEFF is an annual event that showcases films and documentaries focused on environmental issues and sustainable living. It serves as a platform to raise awareness, inspire change, and promote eco-friendly practices.
This important event, centred on the critical issue of water sustainability, was led by Mr. Nuruddin Abdul Aziz, the International Relations Programme Leader at APU’s School of Business (SoB), and supported by accompanying lecturer Mr. Muhammad Ammar Hisyam Mohd Anuar.
Around 30 IR students took part in this insightful field trip, which offered a unique opportunity for hands-on learning and exposure to real-world environmental challenges.
As part of the KLEFF, the students attended the Dialog Forum Air Kita and Panel Discussion on Water Sustainability, which served as a dynamic platform for students to engage with thought leaders, policymakers, and industry experts, expanding their understanding of global water sustainability.
Through discussions on water policies, technological innovations, and regional challenges, students gained practical insights into the complexities of implementing sustainable water practices.
These conversations sparked reflections on how international relations intersect with environmental issues, encouraging students to think about their potential roles in shaping global solutions.
“This field trip was more than just an educational excursion; it was an opportunity to nurture a new generation of leaders who are not only aware of sustainability but are also motivated to take proactive steps toward solving global challenges.
“APU’s participation in the event highlights its dedication to providing immersive learning experiences that empower students with the knowledge and skills needed to inspire positive change both locally and globally,” said Nuruddin.
In line with this commitment, the event provided a unique forum for open dialogue, where students walked away with fresh perspectives and a deeper understanding of the issues at hand.
As Rochella Chrysanth Shayna Bire, one of the students who attended, said, “Water is an essential part of our lives.”
“During the seminar, we learned about the varying distribution of water in Malaysia, focusing specifically on Selangor.
“It was an eye-opening experience that highlighted the importance of using water wisely. The speakers were adept at presenting the topic in both English and Malay, making it accessible for international audiences.”
Another international student, Natsuki Eguchi, shared “As a foreign student, I had never heard about Malaysia’s water challenges before, so this forum was particularly interesting for me.
“It made me reconsider my daily habits and inspired me to switch from using plastic bottles to a reusable one, making a more environmentally conscious decision.”
Adreena Alshafeira Tita expressed her enthusiasm, saying that “The event was amazing, especially learning about the water situation in Malaysia — how we can improve water access, find solutions, and develop backup plans for future needs.”
This field trip not only expanded students’ academic horizons but also instilled a sense of responsibility, encouraging them to consider how they can make meaningful contributions to sustainability efforts.
Through initiatives like these, APU continues to foster a generation of globally aware, socially responsible students ready to lead with vision and integrity.
