APU Athletes Shine at ASEAN University Games (AUG) 2024

APU athletes won seven medals in the ASEAN University Games in Surabaya-Malang, Indonesia, and their remarkable performances helped Malaysia finish third overall.

Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) athletes achieved new heights at the ASEAN University Games (AUG) 2024, which took place in Surabaya-Malang, Indonesia.

The university’s star athletes, Hii Puong Wei and Wan Yu Hong showcased exceptional skill and determination and came home with seven medals: two gold, three silver, and two bronze medals, while Ryan Tan Teng Wei helped his team finish fourth.

The Malaysian contingent finished third overall in the AUG, with 38 gold, 47 silver, and 62 bronze medals.

The hosts, Indonesia, finished top with 126 gold, 99 silver, and 71 bronze medals, followed by Thailand with 53 gold, 49 silver, and 29 bronze.

All 11 Southeast Asian Games Federation members competed in the 2024 ASEAN University Games.

Malaysia swimmer, Puong Wei from Sarawak made waves with two gold medals in the 200m Breaststroke and 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay, while also securing silver in the 200m Individual Medley and bronze in both the 100m Breaststroke and 4 x 100m Medley Relay.

Meanwhile, basketball star from Selangor, Yu Hong contributed significantly to the team’s success by securing two silver medals in the Basketball 5 x 5 and Basketball 3 x 3 events.

Malaysia Volleyball player, Ryan Tan Teng Wei also from Selangor, leading his team to fourth-place finish.

Puong Wei, a dedicated full-time athlete, faced the AUG 2024 games with a sense of ease, thanks to his rigorous training regimen.

“Even though there are faster swimmers out there, I am proud of how I have pushed past my own limits and achieved several personal bests,” he shared.

“As the games wrap up, I am gearing up for SUKIPT 2024 with a commitment to maintaining my daily training routine. My focus will be on staying physically and mentally sharp to achieve even better results.”

In contrast, Yu Hong highlighted a different set of challenges for AUG 2024.

“Our main obstacles were concentration and body contact,” he explained added that “While body contact is common practice for other countries, it is still relatively new for Malaysia, making focus crucial.

“For SUKIPT 2024, we will be honing our set plays and defensive strategies. Our players are skilled, but the lack of structured set plays has sometimes led to chaos on the field. By concentrating on defense, we aim to turn the tide in our favor, as a solid defense can be the key to victory.”

APU is immensely proud of these exceptional athletes and their outstanding achievements.
