APU Lecturer Takes Home Outstanding Academician Award

Honoured for her passion in data science; Dr Booma sees this award as a stepping stone to further success

Women Icon in association with Times Women has named our School of Computing Lecturer, Dr Booma Poolan Marikannan as one of the most prominent women under the category of Women's Teaching/ Research/ Scientist/ Professor/ Academic Leadership Awards as "Outstanding Academician of the Year 2021 Award" highlighted with "No. 1 Women Excellence Awards".

The announcement was made during a virtual event to recognize the efficiency of women who have excelled in their chosen fields due to their abilities and performance, which would encourage them to go on to the next level.

Dr Booma has achieved the accolade for her life-standing passion for Data Science, an academic and professional discipline in the areas of Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Image Processing, Big Data Analytics, Data Visualization, and Health Care Information Technology.

She is constantly in search for new technologies and has engaged herself in corporate training and numerous Data Science projects relevant to the industry's long-term development such as risk analytics, and big data analytics.

She has spent the last ten years pursuing her passion for Data Science research, and she was chosen as one of the outstanding personalities based on documentary evidence such as qualification, teaching experience, number of publications, supervision, and certifications after a thorough examination and recommendation by jury members.

She holds certifications in NET, Tableau Data Scientist badge, Certified Microsoft Innovative Educator program, Machine Learning Professional Certification from Rapid Miner, and Predictive Modelling badge from SAS Academy for Data Science and Machine Learning.

For her dedication and perseverance, Dr Booma was also named a “Women Scientist of the Year 2021” by Humcen last month for her research work “Omics Predictive Model for Early Prediction of Preeclampsia”.

Dr Booma was heartily grateful for the recognition for her work since she feels that everyone else who has been nominated for this award is deserving of it and capable of winning it.

She has faced many challenges along the way, but each one helped to shape her into the person she is today: a complete professional who knows exactly what she wants and who never loses sight of her goal until she achieves it.

“I would not have been able to earn this award without the support, inspiration and encouragement of my family, seniors, and colleagues, all of whom I value and hold in great esteem. I have the courage to challenge myself and excel at every stage.

“I treasure this award as a precursor to greater achievements that lie before me. I will strive to rise and reach the heights by constantly supporting students with full commitment and devotion at all levels.”
