RISE IN COVID INFECTIONS: KEEPING THE APU COMMUNITY SAFE

The Ministry of Health had just reported earlier this week that new COVID-19 cases rose by 57.3% last week compared to the previous week, from 2,305 cases to 3,626 cases.

While a majority of the cases reported experiencing mild symptoms, the number of patients hospitalised due to breathing difficulties from COVID-19 infections has risen.

As such, all staff and students of APU are strongly urged to tale extra measures to avoid exposure to infection and to help prevent the spread of the virus amongst the APU community.

Please note the following guidelines to be followed:

1. The wearing of face masks is encouraged, particularly in crowded areas where close contact is unavoidable.

2. Please maintain a high level of hygiene and cleanliness at all times, ensuring that hands are washed thoroughly and sanitized regularly.

3. Anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat and running nose should seek medical treatment and get tested immediately and avoid coming to campus until the symptoms clear up.

Those who are tested positive and required to please observe the mandatory 5-day isolation period as required.

Keeping the APU community safe is a responsibility that we all share. This can only be achieved if all of us exercise strong self-regulation and adopt best practices to prevent infection.

Mask-wearing now 'highly encouraged' in Malaysia amid rise in COVID-19 cases

The Ministry of Health has reported a spike in the number of COVID-19 infections. Just in the last week of October 2022, the number of new infection cases increased by 16.5% to 16, 917 cases from 14, 255 cases, in the previous week. Given the current situation, the Minister of Health has said that the usage of mask, though voluntary is now ‘highly recommended’.

APU’s Guidelines on the wearing of Mask

1. General University Premises

We are always concerned for the wellbeing of the APU community and in line with the Minister’s advice, would encourage all members to generally wear a mask whilst on the university premises.

2. Confined Space – classrooms, laboratories, library elevators etc.

However, in the best interest of all of us at APU, everyone must  be fully masked always whenever in the classrooms, laboratories, library, elevators and/or in any areas where social distancing cannot be observed.

Let us not let our guard down. Let us continue to stay alert and observe all the required safe health practices against COVID-19. Together, we can help contain the spread of COVID-19.

Stay safe.

IMPORTANT : RESUMPTION OF PHYSICAL CLASSES ON CAMPUS

The Malaysian Government had recently announced the easing of restrictions for international students arriving into the country as well as new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the operation of campuses for all students, which came into effect on 1st May 2022. These are in line with the country’s on-going transition from the COVID-19 pandemic towards endemic status.

In light of the above, we are preparing for our next big step – for teaching and learning activities at APU, APIIT and APLC to revert fully to physical sessions on campus, i.e. back to the “normal” mode of delivery prior to the pandemic.

As such, we are pleased to announce the following changes in programme delivery mode across all Schools:

1. Any Semester/Intensive English Programme (IEP) Level commencing from 1st September 2022 onwards – whether for new or existing students – will be conducted in physical (face-to-face) mode in the classroom across all levels of study and across all programmes. * As such, the option for Hybrid/Online mode will no longer be available starting from these semesters.

2. For all currently running Semesters/IEP Level and those commencing prior to 1st September 2022,  we will continue to conduct classes in hybrid mode until the end of the Semester/IEP Level. Students will then attend the next Semester/IEP Level face-to-face on campus. However, we would still strongly encourage students to make preparations to attend classes on campus even for the current semester as this will help ease the transition back to face-to-face learning.

Based on the above, hybrid learning will be phased out for all programmes, with the aim of all students attending classes on campus by early 2023.

*The exceptions to the above are as follows (as applicable to APU and APIIT students):
  • Compulsory MPU (General Studies) modules will continue to be conducted in a combination of online, hybrid and physical sessions.
  • Part-Time Master Degrees as well as PhD & DBA Programmes will continue to be conducted in hybrid mode until 31st December 2022
  • Students who will be starting their Final semesters at Diploma, Degree or Masters levels from 1st September 2022 onwards may also be allowed the option of continuing in hybrid mode.
For APU/APIIT students, to find out when your specific APU and APIIT intake and semester will be delivered physically on campus, you may refer to this link.

We hope that all students will prepare to return to campus and we look forward to the entire student community being physically on campus over the next few months.

Further announcements will be made regarding SOPs that will be observed while on campus and in classrooms, as and when we receive further guidance from the authorities.

Please do reach out to us at [email protected] for assistance should you have any queries with regard to your return to campus.

Regards,
Academic Administration Services
